Hitting the Ground Running – The Impact of National Standards at Age 5

As part of my studies I was required to compose an opinion piece regarding a topic close to my heart and topical.

Hitting the Ground Running  discusses the impact on both teachers and students in their first year of school life of the National Standards.    It highlights the real purpose of this first year and the importance in establishing the foundations of engaged and avid learners.  A positive learning disposition is key to ensuring future engagement and success at school.  The use of National Standards as a mechanism to measure the rate of progress of a child after one year at school is threatening teachers’ abilities to foster these key learning and thinking skills in this first year.
